JOE KNAPP

JOE KNAPP

Founder, MusicMaster

Before he hit his teens, Joe Knapp built a single-watt AM transmitter and went on the air in Cleveland as WDEC. Joe continued powering up his illegal stations, reaching 3000 watts as WCRO-FM before the FCC shut him down. So, as soon as he turned 18 he went to work at a variety of stations in Cleveland and Milwaukee, serving as Chief Engineer and on-air host and gaining experience with news, production, traffic and billing, sales and management.

In 1983, while working at WZUU-FM Milwaukee, Joe wrote a music scheduling program to replace their unreliable card system. The co-founder of Tapscan saw the program and offered to market it as MusicScan. While Joe continued to develop the software he was asked to help build the new Z-100 in New York, after which he returned to Milwaukee to continue perfecting his music scheduling software. In 1994, Joe split from Tapscan and took over all sales, support and marketing, changing the name to MusicMaster. Today, MusicMaster is the fastest-growing music scheduling platform in the world. The system is now used in dozens of countries by thousands of radio stations.
